Arduino and most of the other microcontroller boards works on 5V DC power supply and the maximum current that can be drawn from Arduino ATMEGA328P pins is just 40mA. To control large 12V brushed DC motors you need some kind of motor driver. The L298N Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver is a great value and can be used with a variety of robot controllers. It features a powerful L298N motor driver module with a heavy duty heat sink. It is powerful enough to drive up to 2 motors from 5-35V at up to 2A peak. An onboard 5V regulator is provided that can be used to power other parts of your robot’s circuitry such as an Arduino microcontroller. It is a high voltage, high current dual full-bridge driver designed to accept standard TTL logic levels and drive inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, DC and stepping motors. It has easy to use screw terminals for connecting input supply and the motors and pin headers for controlling the module using your microcontroller. The onboard LED's shows the status of the motor and the onboard diodes protect your microcontroller against any back EMF. This is a great module to control the speed of the robotics vehicle/motor using PWM and the direction of the motor rotation for navigating the vehicle left or right.
The L298 is a popular motor driver IC that is usable from 6 to 50V, at up to 4A total output current. By itself, the IC is somewhat difficult to wire and use, but the Compact L298 Motor Driver makes it much more convenient to use.
